Grasses are the most important plant family on earth, in numbers of individuals, biomass, area covered, diversity of habitats and value to man. Over 30% of land area of earth is covered in natural grassland and savanna vegetation dominated by grasses. Grasses occur in the tropics, in the arctic and Antarctic, in swamps and deserts and forests, on mountaintops and seashores. There are about 770 genera and 9700 species of grasses in the world.
